(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 20)—The McKendree College hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory Friday night at Illinois State University.
Sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) registered two goals and two assists, while sophomore defenseman Matt Defranco (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/) (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) added a pair of goals to lift the Bearcats to the win. Sophomore center Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill./Highland) contributed three assists as McKendree moved to 16-14-1 overall. The Bearcats will complete their road trip to Illinois State Saturday afternoon.
The Icebirds took a 1-0 lead early in the contest before goals by Defranco, Roberts and freshman center Charlie Donze (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Fairview Heights, Ill./Althoff Catholic) pushed McKendree in front, 3-1. Illinois State stormed back to tie the contest at 3-3 early in the second period before Defranco’s second goal of the contest gave the Bearcats the lead for good.
Junior defenseman Brent Grimm (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon) and sophomore defenseman Shawn McBride (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) each chipped in a goal for McKendree. Freshman Mike Stier (Belleville, Illinois/) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) made 36 saves to earn the victory in goal for the Bearcats.
